The Senior eCommerce Trading Manager will lead the growth and development of WHSmith.co.uk and marketplaces (eBay / Amazon). You will be in charge of defining and delivering the online promotion and trading strategies, owning key commercial relationships with our various partners, including drop-ship partners. You will be responsible for managing the online trading team and working with and influencing other key stakeholders including the High Street buying team, online marketing, content, product development, logistics and customer services. You will also know how to make online and offline channels work together effectively, maximising customer lifetime values across WHSmith.
Online Trading
- Lead the ecommerce trading team to exceed our budgeted sales, margin and ensure exciting category development plans are in place to realise our growth ambitions
- Define and deliver the online trading and promotions strategy for all our online channels including whsmith.co.uk, marketplaces and social
- Lead all day-to-day trading activities, across all online channels, overseeing and approving promotional content and campaigns in line with the brand guidelines
- Deliver and implement the marketing calendar– supporting the trading team to maximise all pre-orders, signed edition books, general merchandise and all seasonal promotional activity
- Own and manage on site merchandising, as well as all VM for all digital products and 3rd party brands / brand shops
- Manage all our online pricing, including analysis of competitor pricing, to ensure we are competitive and supporting growth, whilst balancing the needs of our stores
- Own and drive the sales performance of key pages including homepage, PLPs and all landing pages, analysing site performance to improve overall site experience and sales
- Work with the High Street buying and commercial team to exceed our income targets, and ensure we continue to identify opportunities to generate new business and income opportunities (e.g. brand shops, site collateral)
Online Proposition Growth
- Manage and develop our drop ship partner proposition to ensure we develop a compelling and profitable trading and growth plans
- Own the performance and optimisation strategy of our current (and future) marketplace sites including eBay, Amazon and social channels, to drive profitable growth
- Actively monitor and track competitors to ensure our proposition and promotions are timely, competitive and best in class
- Keep up to date with innovations in ecommerce, omni channel retailing and service development and how these could be benefitting our customers and trading performance
Collaboration
- Work with the online content team to ensure all product set-up requirements are prepared well in advance of all deadlines and seasonal campaigns
- Collaborate with other direct teams to drive key site performance metrics online including bounce rates, add to basket, AOV, conversion, taking appropriate action where necessary to enhance and maximise product and site performance
- Proactive engagement and influence our High Street Commercial teams to ensure we are maximising our online range development and future sales opportunities
Data driven decisions + optimisation
- Use customer insight and behavioural analysis to improve customer engagement, site conversion and the omni channel experience between stores and online
- Asist the web team in identifying appropriate A/B test opportunities to improve trade with multiple experiments across the online estate
About You:
- You are commercially astute, highly results oriented, with a real hunger to drive profitable sales growth online, holding your trading team to a tight sales plan
- You’ll have significant experience of trading online sites, including marketplaces, preferably in a multichannel business with a significant online presence
- You are action and trading focused, able to recognise and balance the trade-offs between customer and commercial objectives to deliver the profit plan
- You are creative commercially, identifying and delivering new revenue streams to drive growth
- You’ve got strong 3rd party relationship management experience, including managing drop ship partners, as well as a good working knowledge of driving marketplace performance
- You’ll have in-depth knowledge of ecommerce search and merchandising best practices and strategies, with a strong understanding of applying and optimising UX principles
- You are a strong, energetic self-starter; intellectually curious with a commercial instinct which is often right
- You have strong analytical skills, experienced in using analytics tools e.g. GA 360 / Content Square, generating valuable insights to make recommendations for the UX and web teams
- You are a strong hypothesis-based tester with A/B and MVT optimisation experience
- You can make sense of complex problems quickly with the ability to turn data into simple actions without paralysis by analysis, hence you are an expert Excel user, SQL preferred
- You’ll be able to demonstrate operational excellence of championing, leading and supporting change in a dynamic business
- Importantly you are a team player and a strong manager, encouraging collaboration both within and between teams
- You build and nurture positive relationships with key stakeholders across the business, influencing, collaborating and positively disrupting to deliver a step change in performance
Experience required:
- 7+ years’ experience in online trading / merchandising delivering profitable growth
- Practical experience in core ecommerce activities, such as traffic generation, UX, CRO and web operations
- Good working knowledge of ecommerce platforms (e.g. Big Commerce, Sales Force preferred but not essential)
- Demonstrate team management and development
- Data driven and analytical with advanced IT skills (GA, ContentSquare, MS Office, Excel/Google Sheets)
- Decisive, organised, with excellent time management
- Worked in fast-paced, deadline-driven environments
